Notes:

This is fully my imagination, completely unrelated to any real person it may seem to portray.I don't profit from this, even comments are hard to come by nowadays. I must be derailed writing fanfics...

The story again takes place in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, but I once more decided not to discuss it for my own mental health. But if you’re not one of my characters and your writer hasn’t expressly authorized you, vaccinate, wear a mask, stay home!

As usual, I’ll be making many assumptions about life in the Takarazuka and adapting everything else for my convenience. I always do my best to stay faithful but only when it suits me, obviously. Please bear with it.

The story starts in the end of summer, beginning of fall, 2021, thus the title. Genius huh? (jkjk) To be honest, this came to me in the middle of a dream, it was the first time a title didn't give me headache, but it did wake me up.

Falling

Chapter 1

Me: I can’t believe this happened!

Reiko: What this time?

Me: the girl who was looking for a boy to forget the other

Reiko: You already said the summary before.

Me: so, she’s now kissing the other

Me: this is so dumb, he has a girlfriend! He rejected her! And he basically demanded she continue to be his friend!

Reiko: Yes, so you’ve been complaining.

Me: I can’t, I can’t anymore

Me: they’re actually ending up together??

Reiko: You’re the one watching the movie.

“What are you so agitated about this time?”

Ari looked up from her LINE conversation and couldn’t hide the guilt. Yuno had already asked her to stop messaging and pay attention to the movie, and she had a point—how to get involved in the story when you’re more focused on finding its flaws.

“I just don’t like this couple.”

“You preferred her with the guy going away for college? They’re in the States, that’s a pretty long distance, and he did say he wants to run from his crazy family.”

Ari might not have paid much attention to the scene with said family, because she’d been researching the cake the guy’s grandmother was famous for preparing. It looked so delicious, she had to tell Reiko about it. In doing so, she now had the link to a recipe archived in their chat log. But very little memory of anything else happening in the scene.

“Wait, what happened?” Ari looked up to see the main girl run from her sweet sixteen party but be stopped by her family.

“Josh’s grandfather is really sick, he just found out. Should we just stop, if you’re not watching?”

She shook her head and didn’t fail to notice Yuno wasn’t touching her like… Ari didn’t even know when they’d distanced from each other in Yuno’s couch when they’d been hugging in the beginning of the movie. Or who’d taken the initiative. “It's almost the end,” she argued, clicking the remote to see they had a little more than fifteen minutes left. “I just hate Josh for leading her on.”

“He loves her, how’s that leading anyone on?” Yuno rebuked.

“But he needed to kiss her to find out undying love? The night he went to her party with a plus one?”

“He just needed some time, it’s not so easy to discern friendship love from romantic love.”

“Yes, it is. I don’t want to see my douki naked.”

“That’s why they kissed, to make sure. And you’re talking about sexual tension now, not romance.”

“I’m talking about half a movie of the protagonist with a heartbreak for this guy. He sucks. How is that a happy ending for the audience who wants him in a coma?”

Yuno didn’t answer. Instead, she seemed distant for a moment; then signaled for them to pay attention to the movie.

“Sorry…” Ari said, while typing her point to Reiko, to make sure at least her friend got why that idea of romance was toxic.

Reiko: You mean this boy should have stopped being the main character’s friend when he found out about her feelings?

Me: and he asked HER to give him room

Me: he’s a big jerk

Reiko: You think if a friend is in love with another, and it doesn’t work, they shouldn’t be friends anymore?

Reiko’s question gave her pause. Because that wasn’t at all her opinion. Or how she acted in real life, taking in consideration she’d had a major crush on Reiko back when they met. And who wouldn’t? Reiko was one of the most beautiful women she knew, including artists she’d never met. So, she had been in the main character’s skin for some time until she noticed it was going nowhere and found someone else. The healthy thing to do. She regretted it even less now she suspected Reiko and Umino Mitsuki of being an item. But never once would she rather go back and stop being friends with Reiko to make the feelings go faster.

Me: it depends

Me: this guy is the worst and kept leading her own

Me: how is that being her friend

Me: but each case is another case, you get it right?

Me: because Haru doesn’t

Ari regretted the last sentence. First, because she knew Yuno disliked it when Ari took their issues to Reiko before discussing it together. Second, she’d let the nickname slip. Because it was Reiko, it was perfectly fine, but Ari did her best not to let the public suspect the two were together and calling her without honorifics, by a nickname not many used, was an unignorable let-on. After a whole year together, such missteps were becoming common, which was a first for her to concern about.

“And I’m off to the tub.” Yuno suddenly rose from the couch and offered a light brush on Ari’s lips.

“Ah,” Ari tried to say and call her attention, but she was already gone. The movie was over without her noticing it. Hopefully, Yuno wasn’t aware of this fact and just wanted to clean up before going to bed. “I guess I’ll stay a little more then,” she said to the walls, going back to her LINE.

Reiko: You’re not evading the question, are you?

Me: my answer is that in this movie, this guy is a jerk

Ari also sent several stamps showing how angry she was, to which Reiko replied with a couple more of dogs showing support. She could answer back with another, but before she decided which, the bathroom door opened.

“Maybe it’s because Fall is finally here, but the water is ultra-nice,” Yuno said. She was wearing a robe and a pinkish lingerie Ari found familiar but not enough to be sure if she’d seen it before. “Ari? You’re not going in? Just forget that phone already.”

Ari turned to the bathroom at her words and took a moment to realize Yuno’s misunderstanding. “I’m going home, actually. I should have already gone, but I forgot to tell you before your bath.”

“You’re not sleeping here?” Yuno furrowed her eyebrows.

“Early day tomorrow, I’m going shopping with Reiko-san.” She observed with apprehension that Yuno wasn’t so understanding of the news. “I should have told you earlier, sorry.”

Yuno crossed her arms, closing her robe with the movement and turning a little to the left.

“Reiko-san has this thing in the afternoon, so she’s picking me up really early.” She wasn’t sure why she was explaining; none of that information would appease her girlfriend. “Sorry…”

  “Like a date?”

“Like an outing to the mall to find winter clothes before they get too expensive. I’m very sorry I was so distracted on the phone today, but that movie…”

Before Ari could find a subtle way to say how bad the movie had been, Yuno clicked her tongue. “I bet it’s her you’ll message first thing when you get home. Don’t you see how weird it is for me, your girlfriend?”

“Of course I’ll message you too. How can you feel jealous of Reiko-san of all people?”

“It isn’t jealousy when…” Yuno gave up mid-argument and just raised her hands. “Why not postpone this? I got it that you have to wake up early, and it’s already a bit late for you to go home.”

Ari bit her lip but offered a smile. “And why not just end the conversation with the conclusion that you’re just—” She stretched her hand to Yuno’s cheek and teased it with a pinch. “A silly girl for being jealous.”

“I don’t like sharing my girlfriend.”

“There it is, you being jealous.” Ari showed the tip of her tongue. “Wasn’t this supposed to happen in the beginning and not after a year dating?”

Lowering her face into Ari’s hand still on her cheek, Yuno just shook her head.

“I’m sorry” Ari continued “I didn’t pay attention to the movie. I’ll give it another chance. You liked it, right?”

“You’re so oblivious. I was disappointed we didn’t make out; wasn’t that the intention for watching a mindless romcom?”

That mindless romcom had gotten Ari thinking enough for her not to agree with the statement, but that was beyond the matter. Instead of refuting, Ari stepped closer and joined their lips together. It was satisfying to feel Yuno’s smile in the middle of the kiss and then kiss her back more deeply. Another crisis averted.

Back in her house, she’d just sent a message to let Reiko know she’d gotten home in safety and would go to bed as soon as she showered, when a pang of realization followed by guilt hit her. Yuno had gotten that one right, although the rest made no sense. Reiko and she were good friends, if she was as lucky as to be considered that much by the other party.

Yuno’s insecurities hadn’t been a problem when they started dating. And she was sure she already talked with Reiko as much as now, maybe even more. They hadn’t had as much time lately because of how busy Reiko’s schedule had become since her Top Star announcement. Adding all that up, Ari knew the problem was with Yuno. Or rather, with how the two of them were drifting apart. Despite being clueless of the problem, she felt it was unfair for Reiko to take the blame.

Reiko: I’m glad you’re fine, it’s late. Hope you’re already in the bath, so see you tomorrow.

Uncertain if she should be answering it even before texting her own girlfriend, Ari just sent a good night. Deep down, she wanted to elaborate how she couldn’t point out the problem in her relationship and explain the argument she’d just come home from. Learn the opinion of someone not involved. Though, maybe, Reiko was involved without her even suspecting.

Then she added a cute stamp of good night, because Reiko had done nothing to deserve a dry response. And she knew that would prompt her to send one back. Reiko didn’t fail to do it. It was cute how she always alternated the same stickers. It was like some private game was going on to see if she’d get anything new in her repertory. She hadn’t this time, but maybe the following night.

Ari remembered to message Yuno when she was plugging her phone to charge before bed. And that mattered. It showed they were still okay, even if it wasn’t all perfect. That’s what she would tell herself for now.

To be continued...
