It was a dark night. The heavy sky looked as though it was about to fall over the red-colored city. It was cold and silent, as opposed to the festive days in Princess Serenity’s court last week. That silence was ominous, and it kept the Princess of Mars’ heart beating grievingly.

She had been having a strange dream for the past few nights. Always the same scene: a shadow would cover the skyline over the Moon and the pearl sparkle in the Queen’s eyes would fade. The Princess would scream for help in such a loud and desperate voice that blood and fire would cover the gardens and millions of voices would follow the noise. Then, as quickly as a summer storm, all the clouds would disappear, all the voices would be gone and nothing but deep silence would have been left behind.

Her long forgotten memories were as fresh as never before.

Mars’ planet had once been inhabited by many people, in a previous era, in another life. But one day, a dark energy cloud arose in the sky and quickly consumed all happiness and flesh and life. She stood for a long time to fight for her people, but the dark energy was stronger than her. She too was about to die and become a dark star, when the legions from the Silver Kingdom arrived and saved her.

These had been dark ancient times, still alive in Mars’ memory.

Since then, as so many others, she had been serving the Silver Millennium in order to fight Chaos, that cruel amount of dark energy that multiplied so quickly by devouring pure souls in the entire universe.

Nowadays, Earth was still a virgin planet. There was water, there was land, and there were people starting to learn how to organize themselves. Thankfully, they hadn’t yet experienced such fright as Chaos, differently from all the other planets spinning around the Sun. Little by little, all the princesses from these planets got together with Queen Serenity in order to protect the immaculate Earth. All of them were doing it with all their souls, life after life, because Earth reminded them of their original lives. Earth could not be destroyed as their home planets had been.

But now, in the fire, Mars could see it. She could feel it. The same pain and agony she had once felt. Everything destroyed. All lost. Love, peace, happiness, compassion, miracles, children, parents, laughter… all consumed by such heartless hungry evil.

“Are you awake again?” Asked a sweet voice from the other side of the bed.

In a short whisper, with a simple question, that voice was able to fill in Mars’ heart with peace and reality.

“Oh, I’m sorry to bother you again. It’s just this feeling… I don’t know. Leave it, I’m better now,” Mars answered, rubbing her long brown hair over and over.

“You know I’m here for you and I’ll always be,” the other girl said, sitting down in front of her. Venus’ hair was as long and straight as Mars’, but it was blond and sparkling, visible in the dark. Her blue eyes had a worried expression, as she stared at her friend’s face.

“I couldn’t be surer of it. But my heart is heavy. It feels like my dream is telling me about something that is about to happen. And you know what my dream is like; I’ve already told you about it. I can’t stop having it. I’m worried, Venus.”

“Your heart is strong and your mind is sensitive. Be calm. Tomorrow morning I’ll order our warriors to intensify the protection of our borders, and I’ll ask for new reports from the outer planets and from Earth.”

“Yes. And if any kind of unwelcome energy threatens our kingdom, we’ll fight it and defeat it as usual. Right?” Replied the brunette lady, in a strong tone.

“Right,” Venus said, smiling. “Now, calm down and dream peacefully once again.”

And with that, she gave Mars the sweetest kiss her lips could provide. The other replied, rapidly spinning her warm and eager body to lie down over Venus. That kiss was longer than the former, and made their passion blaze so intensely that they could not avoid loving each other with all their soul, as they had done so fiercely, so many other nights.

They knew they weren’t supposed to let their feelings interfere in their royal duty, that both of them were soldiers and their mission was much more important than their lives.

But all their feelings… they were unstoppable, and they felt no guilt. While in service, they were as professional as they could be. But, when the night fell, it was the happiest hour for both of them. Such type of relationship wasn’t common in the moon, where the Silver Millennium Palace was located.

“We’re outsiders, right? We’re princesses from strange and distant lands,” Mars used to say, joking. “We must be allowed to have inherited different costumes and odd habits. Besides, no man could ever give me such love. You know that we complement each other.”

“I couldn’t agree more. It is pure love what I feel for you, the purest and sweetest I’ve ever felt,” Venus laughed.

As in so many other dawns, the worries and fear and silence were completely forgotten. Love and heat shone intensely those days. The immensurable power of the Silver Crystal flowed like fresh water, vibrating within the hearts of all the people in the kingdom. Love and happiness were not exclusively intense amongst Venus and Mars’ private walls, those days.

But the omen had been announced to the Silver Millennium, and the future days promised not to be as happy as the present ones.

The news of a revolution on Earth rapidly reached the moon. Who would have thought that the chaos would start spreading from the very place it shouldn’t have reached? The Kingdom of the Moon had always tried to protect the blue planet without interfering in its natural evolution, but they had forgotten how easily deceived humankind was and how cunning the evil forces were.

That was the night. The soldiers stood assembled and the war was coming. The silver palace glimmered strongly in the night as it always had, but silence and fear made it unpleasant to the eyes.

“When they arrive,” said the firm voice of Venus, leader of the legions, “the armored soldiers shall act as our shield. The sailors must aim at Beryl and her servants; their troops will be lost without leadership.”

Around her, there were the other princess fighters. Mercury wore a light-blue uniform and had sweet round eyes and dark short hair. Jupiter, tall and strong, had an angry expression that fitted her brown hair and green clothes in aggressiveness. Mars, standing firmly in her position, was ready to fight.

Her looking into Venus’ eyes would not be clear to anyone except for both of them. Her heart was heavy; she felt they were about to say goodbye.

In front of them, there was an army of moon people wearing silver armors. They had been strategically divided to be commanded by the princesses. There were about 500 of them, standing on the big garden of the palace.

On the palace’s balcony, high over the central tower, everybody could see the Queen and the Princess. So gracious, they were… looking upon their people. With the movement of the army, the pretty flowers of the Princess were the first things to be destroyed. All the people could feel the sadness inside the Queen’s heart, as it pulsated from the Silver Crystal.

On the opposite side of the garden, there were four strange sailors scouts. Mars had never talked to them, because their cruel mission was to spend their lives protecting the outer borders of the solar system. Their reputation was well-known, though. Pluto, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. They looked so graceful in contrast to the blue light that came from Earth. Their silhouettes in war position made them seem to be very heart-willed and strong.

The silver lights of the city started to dim. A heavy atmosphere came over everybody; but it was different from the sadness and grieving they had been feeling. It was evil.

Mars looked up to the sky and saw a black cloud. All the stars faded to black and nothing remained over the horizon except for empty, sad blackness. It was the so-called Metallia. It was Chaos.

She opened her eyes. The pain she felt in her body was nothing compared to what was going on in her heart. Where the beautiful Moon Palace once stood, now lay dozens of columns. Lifeless plaster objects that poorly reflected the sparkle of the old days.

The Princess had been captured. All her effort to fight that earthling man was reduced to nothing when the dark cloud rose her body up and threw it against the floor. Like a candle blown off, the princess of Mars lost her vivacity at the moment she fell down. Covered with blood, she knew that those were her last moments.

Not far from her, lay Venus’s beautiful body. Her blond hair was not as shiny as it used to be, but it was still a beautiful sight. Never had a movement been so difficult, but Mars crawled all the way to her loved one. It didn’t matter if she was alive or not; they needed to be close at last. They touched their hands.

It was a beautiful sad picture. Both girls were now nothing but lifeless lost bodies connected by their fingers on the floor. Blood and dead flowers surrounded them, adding some color to such dark environment.

“I loved you with all my heart,” Mars said with her last breath.

She opened her eyes. Her heart pounded so hurtfully! The ceiling was dark, but it seemed normal. The lights from the city entered the room through the window and showed the bulb. It was off, but it was there. The same bulb from yesterday.

She sat down on the bed, and felt the blankets gently rubbing her feet. There was no blood. She breathed deeply. The television was still on, and the control in her hand. She turned it off, breathed deeply once more and lay down.
It made sense now.

“What’s the matter?” Asked a sweet voice from the other side of the bed.

That voice filled her heart with peace and quiet. She was alive.

Minako’s blond hair contrasted with Rei’s reddish-brown, but they mixed in harmony on the pillow.

“Have you had a bad dream, my love?”

“Yes… and no. Minako-chan, I was just remembering now how we fell in love.”

And both girls kissed the sweetest kiss in this world.

NOTES: Whoa! What a fantastic prompt I got! I sincerely hope my fic pays off to it. I tried to keep it as faithful as possible to the canon. That’s why I chose to set it in the Silver Millennium, considering that so many things must have happened those days and ended up forgotten. It was also easier to keep a certain dream-like atmosphere to the narrative, as we were talking about such a distant past-life. I hope you have enjoyed reading this, Shiraume, and thanks for providing me with this prompt! =)

I must also say that I’m sorry if you have spotted any incorrect structure or unusual lexis, because this is officially my first fanfic in English!

Last but not least, I’m sincerely thankful to Thamy-chan for all her support throughout the process, as usual. You rock, Semíramis! :D

Happy 2012, everyone!
